THE HARRIS FAMILY

Our Story

Two very different beginnings, one shared life — and a story still being written.
It started with a small-town farm girl and a city boy whose paths crossed on a game reserve. What began as a simple meeting quickly turned into something deeper—a love that didn’t take long to grow into a shared life and marriage.

As we planned our wedding, we wanted to give our guests something meaningful—something that came from us. So we made a simple homemade braai spice, carefully mixed by hand with love and intention. What we didn’t expect was the response. People kept asking for more, and in that moment, we realised we had stumbled onto something special. That small jar of spice became the beginning of what is now Stay Salty.

As our products grew—from our original braai spice to new flavours and merchandise added along the way—so did the heart behind it. Inspired by Mark 9:50, “Stay Salty” became more than a name. It became a reminder of how we want to live: grounded in faith, choosing kindness, serving others and living with purpose in the everyday.

But this was never only about what we could make or sell.

In a world that feels increasingly fast, noisy and focused on success and possessions, we’ve felt a quiet but steady calling to live differently—to slow down, return to what truly matters and build a life centred on God, where faith leads and purpose shapes our daily choices.

We dream of a home where meals are made from scratch, where hands are in the soil and where our children grow up surrounded by faith, family and strong values. A life close to the land—simple, intentional and deeply rooted in trusting God to provide and guide each step.

This journey has also led us beyond our own home. Our heart for people grew into something bigger, and through our non-profit work, we hope to walk alongside communities—supporting real needs through food, school environments and practical care, while bringing hope, dignity and joy wherever we can.

Alongside this, we share recipes created with purpose—food made to be enjoyed around a table and shared with the people we love. Through our weekly devotions and family blog, we also open up parts of our lives, our faith, what we are learning and the journey we are walking—not because our lives are perfect, but because they are real.

By The Harris Family is the home of all these pieces of our story. Stay Salty, our food, our faith, our family life, the things we create and our heart for community all come from the same place: a desire to use what God has placed in our hands with purpose.

Our story is still being written, day by day.

And we invite you into it.

Not only through what we make, but through what we share and the way we choose to live. Because in a world that pulls us in every direction, we believe there is something beautiful about returning to what matters most—faith, food, family and community.
OUR JOURNEY

Milestones Along the Way

2022

Where Our Story Began

In March 2022, our paths crossed when I started working at Nambiti Private Game Reserve. A small-town farm girl working as a chef met a city boy working as a field guide, and somewhere between lodge life and life in the bush, our story began.

From “Yes” to “I Do”

2023 was the year we got engaged and began planning our future together. While preparing for our wedding, we made a homemade braai spice as a gift for our guests—never knowing it would become the beginning of Stay Salty. On 13 December 2023, we said “I do” and became husband and wife.

Learning to Do Life Together

One of our first adventures as husband and wife was getting our diving licences together. It challenged us more than expected, but we encouraged each other and pushed through. It became one of our first lessons in doing life together—facing something difficult, supporting one another and celebrating together on the other side.

A Season of Reset

2025 brought a difficult season in our working lives that began affecting our marriage too. My husband stepped away from guiding and hospitality and started farming—a change that gave him space to reset and grow closer to God, while I remained at the lodge. Looking back, we can see that God was beginning to lead us into a new season, even before we understood what He was preparing us for.

Everything Changed

2026 brought one of the greatest changes of our lives—we discovered we were expecting our first baby. Our marriage grew stronger, our relationship with God deepened, and our priorities began to change. I also stepped away from hospitality for a season, while our ideas for Stay Salty, our recipes, devotions, family stories and giving back continued to grow.
On 1 September 2026, By The Harris Family officially launched—a home for our faith, food, family and community. And now we prepare for our greatest new chapter yet: becoming parents.
